Views sought on Gawsworth affordable homes plan

Engine of the North, Cheshire East Council’s wholly owned development company is to hold a public consultation to ask for views on proposed affordable housing in Gawsworth. The exhibition will be held on Thursday 15 March at Gawsworth Methodist Chapel on Dark Lane. The event is an informal drop-in session between 4pm and 8pm. Members of the development team will be on hand to answer any queries.


The proposals include eight affordable homes and two open market homes on land off Dark Lane, Gawsworth. The homes will be a mix of two and three bedrooms, alongside two bungalows.


As part of the scheme, the pedestrian footpath along Dark Lane will be widened and extended to connect to the site via a new pedestrian crossing. A new signalised Puffin crossing over Congleton Road is also proposed, which will much improve connectivity between the village centre and Dark Lane.


Access for the neighbouring Gawsworth Methodist Chapel will also be improved. Subject to approval, the existing access to the Chapel will be closed and vehicular and pedestrian access will be routed through the development.


Cllr Jamie Macrae, Chairman at Engine of the North said:

“The Housing Needs Assessment identified a minimum requirement of 24 affordable homes in the Gawsworth Parish by 2020. The proposed development will provide much needed affordable homes in Gawsworth and go some way in addressing the local need. We have listened to comments made by the community at the information event held in the village in November 2016, and the proposals reflect the feedback received.


“I would encourage people to come along to the public exhibition, view the proposals and most importantly, have their say. There will also be another opportunity to register interest in the proposed properties at the event.”


Sale of the affordable homes would be subject to ‘local connection’ criteria, which means that local residents and those with a strong connection to Gawsworth will be given the first opportunity to purchase a property. A discount of 40% off the market value is currently being proposed.
